Drilling fluid is used to control the downhole pressure, lubricate the drill bit, stabilize the wall surface, there are still other features besides these. Mud is pumped from the ground through the hollow drill string, through the bit nozzles the outlet, and returns to the surface through the annular space between the drill pipe and the hole wall.

When the drill grinding rocks into cuttings,these cuttings become mud flows entrained and transported to the ground. For mud return to mud circulation system, the solids particles are easily treated, they must be separated from the mud. The drill cuttings separated from the mud's first step involves oil mud circulating shale shaker.

Liquid mud through the shale shaker and mud pump's under mouth and recycled back to the mud tank. Drilling cuttings stay on the top of the shale shaker, they can be collected and stored in a storage tank or pit for further processing or management.
 

Generally, two series of oil shale shakers are used together in mud system. The first series shale shaker (main oil shaker) can only remove larger drilling cuttings by coarse screen. The second series shale shaker (auxiliary oil shaker) can remove smaller particles with with a fine shale shaker screen. In general, the separated drill cuttings have substantially equal volume with cuttings in a large number of drilling mud.
