Structural Design Principle of Drilling Mud Shear Pump
2026-06-29

A drilling mud shear pump is a high-efficiency mud preparation and conditioning device designed to rapidly produce high-performance drilling fluids. By applying continuous high-speed shearing, refining, and mixing, the shear pump effectively changes the molecular chain structure of mud additives, eliminates the common "fish-eye" phenomenon, and ensures that drilling mud meets strict performance requirements. Compared with conventional mixing methods, the drilling mud shear pump significantly shortens mud preparation time, improves mud quality, and enhances overall drilling efficiency. As an important part of mud solids control equipment, the drilling mud shear pump is widely used in oil and gas drilling, HDD projects, and drilling fluid treatment systems.

Main Structure of Drilling Mud Shear Pump

The drilling mud shear pump mainly consists of the following components:

 Impeller assembly

 Volute casing

 Packing box

 Drive shaft

 Pulley and narrow V-belt

 Electric motor (explosion-proof)

 Support base

Among these components, the impeller assembly is the core part and is structurally different from that of a conventional centrifugal pump.

Impeller Design and Working Principle

The impeller of a drilling mud shear pump has a complex and compact structure, designed specifically for high-shear applications. It is mainly composed of five integrated parts:

 Axial flow turbine

 Slurry storage tank

 Pump wheel

 Pressurized chamber

 Shear plate

The axial flow turbine, pump wheel, and slurry storage tank are integrally cast from stainless steel, ensuring high strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent shear efficiency.

Fluid Flow and Shearing Process

The axial flow turbine supplies fluid with a specific displacement to the pump wheel and slurry storage tank. Approximately 50% of the fluid is discharged through the pump wheel into the volute, while the remaining 50% enters the slurry storage tank. The uniquely designed pressurized chamber provides additional energy to the fluid in the slurry tank.

Fluid discharged from the impeller flows parallel to the shear plate at high velocity. Meanwhile, fluid drawn into the slurry tank is sprayed perpendicular to the shear plate through multiple nozzles. When these two high-speed fluid streams mix, they impact the serrated outer edge of the rotating shear plate. The high rotational speed of the shear plate causes secondary and multiple shearing actions, greatly enhancing dispersion, hydration, and refinement of mud additives. As a result, the fluid passing through the impeller undergoes multiple high-intensity shear processes, ensuring uniform mixing and rapid hydration.

Sealing System and Drive Configuration

The drilling mud shear pump adopts a high-reliability mechanical seal, ensuring zero leakage and significantly extending service life. Improvements in the pump shaft sealing structure further enhance durability and operational stability.

Key drive features include:

 - Stainless steel turbine and shear plate

Liquid shear velocity exceeding 25.4 m/s

The dual shearing effect on approximately 50% of the fluid

 - Special heavy-duty base installation

 Pulley and narrow V-belt transmission

 55 kW / 75 kW explosion-proof motor

When used together with a properly sized mixing hopper, the drilling mud shear pump forms a complete shear and hydration system, also known as a shear mixing jet device.

Structural Design Advantages

The advanced structural design of the drilling mud shear pump provides the following advantages:

 - Significantly enhances the hydration of bentonite and soil particles

Saves more than 30% of bentonite consumption, reducing drilling fluid costs

Enables rapid dilution, shearing, and hydration of high-molecular-weight polymers

 - Eliminates fish-eye formation and improves mud stability

Provides higher displacement and head for mud preparation systems

Due to its high shear efficiency, the shear pump is especially suitable for pre-shearing polymers, which are difficult to hydrate when added directly to drilling mud.

Conclusion

The drilling mud shear pump is an essential component of modern solids control systems. By delivering high-intensity shearing, rapid hydration, and efficient mixing, it reduces bentonite consumption by over 30% , eliminates fish-eye formation, and improves overall drilling fluid quality. Whether in oil and gas drilling, HDD projects, or mud treatment systems, this shear pump provides reliable, cost-effective performance.
